Battered Women’s Shelter (BWS) offers services to anyone experiencing intimate partner violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking. We offer programs and services to persons from all demographics (including adult males, elderly, LGBTQ, immigrants and refugees, deaf and hard of hearing, etc.) in Summit and Medina counties. Efforts focus on two priorities:Effective intervention at a time of crisisPrograms and community education to prevent abusive situationsBWS provides a 24/7 hotline service for anyone to call, survivors or co-survivors. A co-survivor is someone who is not suffering the abuse directly but is someone who is close to the survivor. A co-survivor could be a family member, a close friend, or a partner. Our trained advocates can help safety plan, answer questions, educate, and screen for emergency shelter. BWS provides Crisis Intervention, either on the phone during a hotline call or in person at the shelter.Residents also received a case manager who supports them and works with them on their personal goals. BWS uses a Trauma Informed Care Approach to working with survivors. Trauma Informed Care is supporting survivors where they are, not pushing our own agenda, or what we think is best. People in the community can also receive case management through the Family Stability program. We also offer case management to our elderly population who may be victims of abuse or neglect. We work directly with Adult Protective Services to provide services, resources, and referrals. BWS also provides advocates who support and educate survivors while navigating the justice system. BWS can also provide information and referrals to other community resources. If we don’t provide the service in house, we will make every effort to find the survivor what they need. Our Therapy program is another service we offer for free. Survivors and co-survivors seeking therapy do not need an insurance card or a co-pay. Survivors can receive services anonymously or only using their first name. We respect whatever is most comfortable for the survivor. Support Groups are another great resource that BWS provides shelter residents and also community members. Our support groups are always evolving and changing to meet our community needs.
