This program is designed to aid persons presenting to the emergency department of the hospital or law enforcement offices as survivors of rape or sexual assault. The advocates provide emotional support to the person during the evidence collection, medical exam and law enforcement interview process. In addition, advocates provide linkage to other services in the community, support groups and follow up. Advocates also provide support, information, and referrals to family and friends of the survivor. Telephone support is on a 24 hour basis, via the hotline. Advocates are also available for phone support at the request of the hotline. The goal is to decrease the trauma of evidence collection and help lessen the fear and confusion often associated with being in an emergency department or law enforcement environment. The advocate's role is to support the survivor so they do not have to go through the process alone.
