The mission of the Fair Housing Center is to protect and expand fair housing rights, eliminate housing discrimination, and promote integrated communities. The Fair Housing Center has developed a template letter to request an in-person appeal for a housing application denial due to criminal background. A companion instruction sheet is also available. The Fair Housing Center also provides information and advocacy for individuals experiencing housing discrimination. They also assist those in need of disability-related reasonable accommodations/modifications in their housing. For example, they can help someone request an RA for a housing provider to overlook someone's past criminal activity that they engaged in as a result of, or in connection with, a prior addiction or substance abuse and they are now in recovery.
